Where is Gokyo Ri?

The famed Gokyo Ri is situated at the west side for the Ngozumpa Glacier, which is the largest glacier in Nepal and is considered the largest at the entire Himalayas. About Gokyo Lake History

About Gokyo Ri Lake, it also lies at an altitude of 4700 meters and 5,000 meters. It is one of the biggest lakes which consists of six very main lakes and is located at the Sagarmatha National Park at the Solukhumbu district of eastern Nepal.

The Gokyo Lake system consisting of 19 lakes is also spread over 196.2 altitude. The altitude ranges from 4600 to 5100 meters.

The Gokyo Ri Lakes is one of the most celebrated and holiest places for both the followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. The site has many devotees while taking a holy dip in the water of Gokyo Lake. On the day of Janai Purnima, hundreds of devotees come to this place. There are also temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in the western corner of the lake.

The site is also worshiped as the place of the Snake deity. Not only is Gokyo Ri Lake famous but there is a village known as Gokyo village which is the main center at this area which sits at an altitude of 4790 meters. 

How To Reach Gokyo ri?

There are several ways to reach the Gokyo lake. You can either choose to take a flight or helicopter to Lukla or take a bus ride to Jiri from Kathmandu then you can walk to Gokyo Lakes. There are also three ways that you could reach Gokyo Ri which are as follows

Kathmandu to Lukla by Flight

If you choose to take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the duration for the flight is about 35 minutes. Your flight starts from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and will end at Lukla.

Kathmandu to Lukla by Helicopter

Sometimes due to flight cancellations, many trekkers choose the helicopter flight to Lukla. The helicopter is also an available option for those people who loves to go up and enjoy the aerial view of the location.

Kathmandu to Jiri by Land

To go to Jiri from Kathmandu, you can get the express bus or local bus. Bus leaves from the old bus station at Ratna Park early in the morning every day from 6 to 8 am.. Kathmandu to Jiri by bus will take you almost 7 to 8 hours though and just 190 kilometers away from the capital city of Kathmandu.

Why is Gokyo ri Famous for?

The holy Gokyo lakes are of religious significance to the Hindus and Buddhists. These lakes have also provided refuge for migratory birds during their trans- Himalayan migration, twice annually. Apart from this, Gokyo is also renowned for being the world's highest altitude ice skating range and part of for the Ramsar sites.

About Gokyo ri, Gokyo Lake, and Gokyo Valley

Gokyo Lake with Gokyo Ri Trek starts from Lukla after taking the exciting mountain flight to Lukla. We will follow the classic Everest Base Camp Route from Lukla through the beautiful Sherpa villages of Phakding, Monju, and Namche Bazaar. From Namche, we have to follow the main trail till Sanasa and the trail to Gokyo Valley follows Dudh Koshi River at its source, Ngozumpa Glacier towards the beautiful hamlet of Gokyo Valley. Ngozumpa is the longest glacier in Nepal Himalaya; you will have an amazing view of it from Gokyo Ri, also known as Gokyo Trekking Peak. 

Gokyo Ri is also the trekking peak at the Khumbu region which is above Gokyo Valley at the west side of the Ngozumpa glacier. Normally it takes about 2 hours to hike up from the Gokyo Ri depending on your fitness and stamina. From Gokyo Ri, it is possible to see four 8,000-meter peaks: Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8463m), Lhotse (8516m) and Cho Oyo (8201m) with several other small snow-capped peaks. We will also have a chance to see and enjoy Turquoise enticing blue high altitude lakes around Gokyo Valley in an area which are considered to be holy. The Gokyo Lake trek, also known as Gokyo Valley or Gokyo Ri Trek is a fairly popular trekking trail. The route itself ends at Gokyo Ri and Gokyo Lake fifth and trekkers typically turn around in this point and retrace their steps back to the trailhead. There are two alternative trekking routes which begin near the southern tip of Ngozumpa Glacier. This alternative route also leads east over the Cho La; a pass at 5,420 m (17,782 ft) to meet with the main Everest Base Camp trek route. Many people start the Gokyo Ri trek with Everest Base Camp.

Thing to do Nearby Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is also known as Dawa Choling Gompa, at  the Tengboche village in Khumjung in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal is the Tibetan Buddhist monastery for the Sherpa community. Situated at 3,867 meters (12,687 ft), the monastery is the largest gompa at the Khumbu region of Nepal. It was also built in 1916 by Lama Gulu which has links to its mother monastery known as the Rongbuk Monastery in Tibet. 

In 1934, it was also destroyed through the earthquake and was also rebuilt. In 1989, it was destroyed for a second time by a fire and then rebuilt with the help of volunteers and international hand. Tengboche monastery is among  the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with the  panoramic view of the Himalayan Mountains, that also includes well-known peaks of Tawache, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. Tengboche is the main site of the "Sacred Sites Trail Project" for the Sagarmatha National Park which attracts a large number of tourists for trekking and mountaineering sites.
